What To Wear While Doing Yard Work Outdoors

Whether you’re pulling weeds, planting flowers, or mowing the lawn, working in the yard or garden requires the correct attire. The outdoors hold many hazards—sun damage, sharp tools, and heavy objects are just a few examples. Here are a few recommendations for what to wear while doing yard work outdoors to keep yourself safe.

Long Sleeves and Pants

Layers are the best sun protection. Wear full-coverage items to protect as much skin as possible from harmful UV rays. However, this isn’t always possible if you live in a warm climate. Some areas are simply too hot to wear anything more than a tank top.

In these instances, wear lightweight clothes to prevent overheating. Apply generous amounts of sunscreen and remember to reapply frequently. Working under a shady tree or outdoor umbrella can also block out some sunlight.

Face Protection

Your face and eyes get a significant amount of sunlight, which can result in sunburn, wrinkles, and age spots over time. It’s important to wear the proper sun protection to minimize these risks.

We highly recommend wearing a hat to keep the sun off your face. Large hats with wide brims are best, though baseball hats will do in a pinch. Don’t forget a good pair of sunglasses to protect your vision. Finally, apply sunblock to your face and neck before heading out to the garden!

Foot Protection

You’ll be working with sharp tools like pruning shears out in the garden and power tools such as lawnmowers or weed eaters. In either instance, proper foot protection is a must.

We recommend high-quality work boots for the job. Look for a pair made of a water-resistant material so that your socks don’t get wet if you’re caught in the sprinklers. If you’re partial to western wear, some western-style work boots may be the perfect fit for you.

We hope we gave you some good insight into what to wear while doing yard work. Gardening and landscaping are excellent activities with countless benefits to your physical and mental health, but it’s important to take care of your skin while caring for your plants!
