Tips for Transitioning Your Interior to Fall

When the season changes from winter to spring, we have a tradition of spring cleaning when we prepare our homes for warm weather. Given that we spend far more time indoors in the cooler months than we do in the warmer, it pays to do the same thing in the fall. Our tips for transitioning your interior to fall will help you welcome fall and winter.

Do Some “Fall Cleaning”

As we said, you are about to spend a lot of time inside, so you will want to make sure your interior is a pleasant place to be. That means taking the time to give your home a deep clean. Here are a few tasks to add to your to-do list:

  • Declutter and purge
  • Replace your filters
  • Deep clean the carpets
  • Refinish the floors
  • Clean windows
  • Inspect your heating systems

Cleaning also offers the perfect opportunity to put away things that you only use in the summer, such as warm-weather clothes, and pull out winter essentials.

Prepare Your Table

Fall doesn’t just mean cold weather. It means Halloween parties and Thanksgiving dinners, and you don’t want to wait until the day of to realize you can’t find any of your good China or serving bowls. While you’re cleaning out your house, make sure you know where your dishes and cutlery are.

Bring In Nature

A surefire way to call fall to mind for whoever walks into your house is to bring a little autumnal nature into your space. As you’re transitioning your interior to fall from the summer, try switching out the vase of flowers to a vase of marigolds or sunflowers or the decorative door sign to a lovely, autumnal wreath.

Switch Out Textiles

Cold weather is snuggle weather, and snuggle weather means blankets. This is the perfect time to bring out a few extra throw blankets and maybe swap out the couch pillows with softer alternatives.

You will also want to prepare your bedding for the colder nights ahead. This may mean switching to flannel sheets, a thicker quilt, or even triple-sheeting.

Pro-Tip

If you plan on switching sheets, be cautious about how you decide to store your warm weather sheets. To help keep your bedding looking new, make sure you keep it in a breathable container in a dark, dry area.
